What Is A Credit Check?

When you apply for credit cards, loans, even some jobs and they say they’re going to run a credit check.  What exactly is this credit check?  How about those bills you have paid a little late, water bill, electric bills, etc.?  Do they count when they check your credit?  All these items play a role in your credit, they want to see if you can handle your money wisely, pay debts on time, and so on.  They look to make sure you are paying and not defaulting, making sure you have not had bad credit, or personal bad credit loans.

Searching your credit and coming up with how you handle finances gives the new lender a sense of what your financial status looks like and how you have handled them in the past.  Even when applying for bad credit loans, they check your credit, determine such things as what interest to charge you, what fees you will have to pay, and other terms of your loan.

Your public records help these lenders and financial institutions see your credit history.  It can show them accounts you’ve had from over six years back, giving them a clear view of your credit history.  This also gives them an idea of what type of spending and payback history you have.

Lenders will then rank you on a scale, this is your credit score, a three digit number which will tell them how much of a risk or non-risk you are.  Therefore, even if they come up with a lower score, they may still offer you the credit, but they will charge you a higher interest, more fees, because they see you as a higher risk.  Plus, if one company turns you down for credit, does not mean they all will.  Some lenders have a scale of their own that they go by.  They may also take into consideration your age, your occupation or if you’re a homeowner.
